Wood based gallop surface and menage surfaces are very eco-friendly (without the use of treatments) and with correct care can last as long as 10 years and are ideal for internal use as they do not give off the odour on hot days that artificial menage / gallop surfaces do. Don’t be tempted to go for cheaper wood fibre or wood chip menage surfaces as these may contain metal fragments or be either too small or too large a chip, which can be lodged in the horses hooves. Pro Gallop surfacing is cost effective when compared to rubber surfacing – based on a 3M x 1000M gallop (at 200mm depth) a reclaimed rubber based gallop surface would require approximately 300 tons of surface, costing in the region of £60 per ton (£18,000!) whereas 600 cubic metres of Pro Gallop surface would cost in the region of £6000, and did we mention wood chip is environmentally friendly?
Calculating your requirements couldn’t be easier. A new gallop will require a depth of 200 to 250 mm of chip (to allow for settle and bedding in). So if your gallop is 3 by 1000 metres, simply multiply all three measurements together like this: 3 x 1000 x 0.2 = 600 cubic metres of Pro-Gallop Menage Surface is required. Correct drainage and the use of a quality membrane is essential for a good gallop.
